CHAMBER BOARD BUSINESS

At their regular March board meeting the board of directors approved the following:

· The ad hoc Christmas Committee Chairperson, Ms. Muchow’s, report. The report sets the date for the annual Christmas celebration on Saturday, December 20th. (see Christmas 2008, pge 2)

· Kansas Wesleyan University Chorale concert on Wednesday, April 23, 7:30pm at the EHS Performing Arts Center. (See Concert page 2)

· Sponsorship of the Culpepper & Merriweather Circus to be held at the Ellsworth Recreation Center grounds on Thursday, May 29^th. (See Circus page 2)

· Change of May meeting date and noon luncheon to Monday, May 19^th, due to the Memorial Day holiday on the 26^th.

In other business the board:

Received a report from guest Brenda Chelvan, Globalink Inc., regarding plans for upgrading the chamber web site to include photos of the business and other potential improvements.
Reviewed plans for the April noon luncheon schedule with Greg Schmidt, Sales Manager, Eagle Communications TV, as the speaker. (See April Noon Luncheon page 2). For the May noon luncheon

Linda Denning, Editor/Publisher, Ellsworth County Independent-Reporter, will be the speaker.

· Was advised by the director that the radio commercial promoting Ellsworth will begin playing in April on radio stations in Salina, Great Bend and Russell. The spots will continue in May and June as in-kind membership funds will allow.

CHRISTMAS 2008

After reviewing surveys returned by downtown retailers, the Ad hoc Christmas Planning Committee has set Saturday, December 22^nd as the official celebration of Christmas in Ellsworth. Plans call for activities beginning at noon with entertainment, Santa Claus, and prize drawings throughout the afternoon. The parade is scheduled for 5:30pm followed by the Ellsworth County Independent-Reporter’s major cash drawing. Activities for children and wrapping of packages by students are ideas also being considered.

The real secret of staying young is being too busy to think about it.

CONCERT

The Chamber board of directors is sponsoring the Kansas Wesleyan University Chorale in concert under the direction of former Ellsworth instructor Ken Hakoda. Nine Ellsworth area students are members of the Chorale which has recently completed a concert tour to California. The date is Wednesday, April 23^rd at the EHS Performing Arts Center, 7:30 pm. The doors will open at 7:00. Admission will be free-will.

CIRCUS

The Chamber board has signed an agreement with the Culpepper & Merriweather Circus for two May 29th performances, 5:00 and 7:30 pm. The agreement required a $290 sponsor fee which may be refunded depending on the number of adult tickets that are sold. Since there has not been a circus in Ellsworth for some time the board felt that it has a good potential for a fund raiser. Advance ticket sales are the key to success as the chamber will receive a larger percentage of sales than from the gate. Advance prices are $6 and $8 as opposed to $7 and $11 respectively, at the gate. The board will complete plans for the sale of tickets at their April board meeting. In addition to local sales, the circus will do telephone marketing of children’s tickets to local businesses. I have been advised that the marketers will begin contacting businesses sometime within the next 2 weeks. We will receive credit for any of those ticket sales and will be responsible for delivering and collecting the money. Businesses will have various options for distribution of the tickets purchased. APRIL NOON LUNCHEON

The April 28^th noon luncheon will be held at the Ellsworth Golf Course meeting room with Greg Schmidt, Sales Manager, Eagle Communications TV, as the guest speaker. Students from EHS will be recognized. The Pizza Hut will cater the lunch. Invitations will be forthcoming. The board is pleased with the response from the first two lunches with approximately 40 attendees at each session.

It really doesn’t matter who wears the pants in the family as long as there is money in the pockets.

RANCH RODEO

The El-Kan Western Riders Ranch Rodeo is to be held on Saturday, April 26th at the El-Kan Western Riders Arena. The cowgirl’s event starts at 10:00 am with Ranch Horse Show competition at 2:00 pm. The men ride at 7:00 pm. El-Kan President Alan Stefek has indicated that the expenses for the rodeo are covered so there will be no admission charge at the gate. This could enhance attendance and provide a number of visitors to the community throughout the day.

NUPTIALS

Downtown business woman and chamber member Kelvi Peschka, Lux Interiors, will wed Ellsworth native, Karlton Place at St. Paul’s Evangelical Church on Saturday, April 26^th at 4:00 pm. I invite our members to join us in congratulating Kelvi and Karlton.

Marriage would be pretty dull without a cross word. Here’s an example: Kelvi: “I’ll admit I’m wrong if you’ll admit I’m right.” Karlton: “O.K .You go first.” Kelvi: “You’re right.”

SAMPLER FESTIVAL

The 2008 Kansas Sampler Festival is being held at the Concordia City Park on Saturday, May 3, 10am-5pm and Sunday May 4, 10am-4pm. The festival is about architecture, art, commerce, cuisine, geography, history and people. It is an exceptional showcase for all of the counties in Kansas. The Ellsworth County booth is sponsored by Smoky Hills Development Corporation, Ellsworth-Kanopolis Chamber of Commerce and the National Drovers Hall of Fame. Volunteers are needed to man the booth. Items for booth visitors are being provided by Wilson (mini-kolaches), Holyrood (wheat bags), Kanopolis (salt), the historical society (cow patty cookies), brochures from the chamber and copies of the Independent-Reporter’s KanHistique publication. Other items will be added before the event. According to Jan Essick both days’ schedules are in need of some volunteers in order to have some relief for the few who will be there. Anyone needing information on volunteering may contact Ms. Essick at 472-4617 or call the chamber office.

CHAMBER GATHERIN

We have no gatherin’s scheduled for May and July-November. Anyone interested in hosting, please contact the office.

GIFT CHECKS

In March there were two deposits totaling $145.00. The bank processed 57checks with a value of $660.00. Gift checks still outstanding total $ 4347.00

CHAMBER MARKETNG REMINDER

Businesses wanting to get special information out to chamber members need only provide material through emails that can be forwarded and downloaded to be copied and faxed to members without email capabilities. Sorry we cannot do mailings but the two methods listed reach over 90% of our membership.

BUSINESS LOCATION CHANGE

RENOVATIONS/EXPANSIONS

Current major renovations underway in Ellsworth are: The Ellsworth County Medical Center, 1604 Aylward which is progressing very well. Offices in the medical center are being transferred to the new Administrative Building (Century Building) and will continue until the project is completed.

In downtown:

a Kurt Williams, DDS, has two properties being restored-renovated on the south 200 block of Douglas.

a Last month Mosaic finalized the acquisition of the old Gene's IGA building. Remodeling is planned to begin by the end of January and is predicted to take anywhere from 8 to 10 months. Fuqua & Doerksen Construction of Inman, Kansas has been chosen as the general contractor. The intent of the new building for Mosaic is to house all administration offices as well as being utilized by the day site services. Mosaic will continue to use the existing Lobby Shop at 306 N. Douglas and is looking for ideas to expand current productions. Thanks to Deena Dusburg for furnishing this report.

a This past week some activity was noted across the street at the National Drover’s Hall of Fame building which means serious renovation will begin in the near future.

These major investments in Ellsworth are significant to the local economy now and in the future. Ellsworth is, indeed, fortunate to have individuals and organizations with the foresight and faith in the potential for successful operations in our communities. As a lifelong resident I am pleased that such a major foundation is being laid for future generations. In a previous update I referred to some of our talented young people returning to Ellsworth to establish a business and furthering careers with intentions of remaining. These significant investments may foster similar feelings among our present young people in considering where their life goals may best be fulfilled after furthering their education. At most, it is very encouraging.

My memory’s is not a sharp as it used to be. Also, my memory is not a sharp as it used to be.

NEW MANAGER

If you have not met her yet, I encourage you stop by Casey’s General Store and meet their new manager, Krystina Walls. She began her Ellsworth duties the first of the year. Krys and her husband Trent had purchased a home here while living in Hays. She is happy to have found work after moving in November. The family consists of five children, four of whom are attending our schools. They are 2^nd graders, Christian and Jasmine, 4^th grader, Mercedes and 5^th grader Jared. Luke, age 3, is the youngest. Trent is currently a graduate student at Neuman College, Wichita. I asked Krys about their children’s transition to our schools and she indicated that the kids just love it. We welcome Krys, Trent and family to our communities.

ANNUAL MEETING

The board completed their final planning with the selection of this year’s theme, “Working Together to be Great in 2008”; approved Butch’s B-B-Q for the banquet meal; confirmed Susan Janzen Nickerson as the speaker; set prices at $18 for members and $20 for public; agreed not to provide reserved seating except for full table reservations and other specified reserves. Tickets will be available at the chamber office.

Know how to prevent sagging? Just eat till the wrinkles fill out.

CONCESSION STAND HOSTS

Board members; Amy and Pete Eck, Megan Muchow and director Slechta as well as Ambassadors; Heather Barta, Janet Carswell, Bev Connally and George Jones supported the chamber’s services at Tuesday night’s basketball game. With assistance of the regular school workers it was an interesting and fun evening.

GIFT CHECKS

In December there were nine deposits totaling $6,815. The bank processed 323 checks for a total of $4,190. The checks still outstanding total $6,414. If history repeats, January will also be a large deposit month. Many businesses did very well this holiday season. I am repeating a plea I made earlier this year to the businesses on the gift check participants handout. That is: to instruct your employees to PLEASE write, stamp or otherwise identify your business on the “pay to the order of” line. I make it a policy to go over every cancelled check to determine if there are any non-participating businesses accepting our checks. I also like to see how many businesses are benefiting from this “shop at home” program. The cancellations on the back are so small and poorly duplicated that I cannot ascertain the depositor. This is not a big deal when there are only 50-75 checks. But 323 was time consuming to say the least. Nearly 25% were left blank. I thank you for this consideration.

These days about half the stuff in my shopping cart says, “For fast relief.”

DOWNTOWN PARKING

Most of us who work downtown do not give much thought to downtown parking as long as we don’t impede the ability of our customers and clients to reach our places of business. It appears that most owners and employees recognize this common courtesy. The street that has potential possible consideration is West and East 1^st Street. There are nine businesses on these blocks that rely heavily on walk-in traffic. Parallel parking takes more space than on Douglas. This is a reminder for employers to encourage employees to observe the spaces near these storefronts even if it means an extra block of walking. I know the owners will be very appreciative.

Reporters interviewing a 104-year-old woman: “And what do you think is the best thing about being 104?” the reporter asked. She simply replied, “No peer pressure.”

GOOD NEIGHBOR

This week I was experiencing a near melt down of my Quickbooks Accounting System. I could not make an entry before getting the “Fatal Error” message and an immediate shutdown. I had visions of having to type gift and regular checks until I could find the answer. Anita Hoffhines stopped by and I told her of my plight. She took a look at the problem, which was an obvious memory fault. She went back to her office to seek some possible solutions through her Quickbooks system. She came back with several possibilities and applied the first one. It dumped a huge batch of unnecessary records in storage. Problem corrected. Before, it was taking 3 minutes for Quickbooks to open as well as closing. It is now closer to 5 seconds. What a relief. My sincere thanks for Anita taking the good neighbor philosophy beyond a normal calling.

THE SENILITY PRAYER: Grant me the senility to forget the people I never liked anyway, the good fortune to run into the ones I do, and the eyesight to tell the difference.

A ranch rodeo is alive and well ... despite claims

Ranch rodeo competition is still alive, in spite of reports from End of the Trails Ranch Rodeo Committee General Chairman Dennis Katzenmeier. The dates have been set for April 25-26, and the organization committing to the effort is the El-Kan Western Riders Association.

"While Katzenmeier aired reports that the Ellsworth-Kanopolis Chamber of Commerce was killing the event by pulling administrative and monetary support, he failed to mention critical historical elements, which lead to the Chamber’s decision to no longer offer administrative support," Chamber President Amy Eck said.

For example, at the June 19, 2006, meeting, Ellsworth-Kanopolis Area Chamber of Commerce Director Nick Slechta was commissioned by the board of directors to write a letter to Katzenmeier expressing concerns about the Ranch Rodeo’s organizational capabilities and the questionable financial benefit for continued operation under the auspices of the Chamber. That letter also requested Katzenmeier to keep in contact with the chamber, especially when the Ranch Rodeo was nearing. However, there was no response and no representative at any meeting for a year, even though Katzenmeier was made aware of Chamber board meetings.

A letter dated Dec. 6, 2007, to the Ranch Rodeo Committee, included a summary of income and expenses from 1999, when then-Chamber President Katzenmeier proposed the Ranch Rodeo as a fund-raiser, and the event began with the Chamber’s assistance. The records from earlier years were difficult for the Chamber director to discern; however, after reviewing financial statements and meeting minutes, Slechta was able to draft a letter to the committee.

The letter, in part, stated: "The board of directors in the 1999-2003 time period did not look at the budget adjustments based on the plus and minus years and accepted the losses or gains in the general operating budget. There was nothing in the minutes to suggest any set asides as a result of a positive balance. The 2004 board decided not to follow that philosophy and made the decision to establish a savings account to earmark the $1,280 net gain for possible overruns in the future even though it could have been placed in the general fund as in the past. It was needed in 2006 when the rodeo experienced an $888 loss."

Eck said, "The Chamber looks for events to sponsor that not only bring people to town but that also are not an economic drain on the Chamber. The Chamber must operate like any other downtown business – looking to cut the things that cost more money than volunteer time can cover and look for more positive venues. The Chamber has an obligation to its membership to make sure we’re using their money, which keeps the Chamber doors open, to the best of our abilities on sound business ventures. If after a period of time an event cannot make enough money for start-up the next year, then we needed to assess that event and see if it is something we are willing to put our time and effort in. We did not leave the Ranch Rodeo to dwindle and die. Our director was in contact with the El-Kan Western Riders in November before the board made its decision to cease as administrative and financial support for the Ranch Rodeo. And Mr. Katzenmeier was made aware of that before he began his reports to the contrary."

Eck also retorted Katzenmeier’s statement in a letter dated Jan. 11, 2008, from Katzenmeier to area supporters, "The Chamber never said, ‘the rodeo weekend had no economic impact on Ellsworth economy or its historic heritage.’ Any time an event brings around 250 to 500 people to town, you know they will either buy a lunch at a local restaurant or fuel when they leave. To say there is no economic impact on Ellsworth would be ridiculous."

"If Mr. Katzenmeier had placed as much time and energy on finding another sponsor instead of demeaning the local chamber, he might have been surprised at how much support he would have found in the area for his event," Eck said.

At the Dec. 3 meeting, the Chamber board offered Katzenmeier support, while not administrative, of in-kind sponsorship in the amount of $500 if the Ranch Rodeo committee could reorganize. Since that committee has decided to not continue with the End of the Trails Ranch Rodeo, in a show of support for a ranch rodeo as a local event, the chamber board of directors at their monthly meeting Monday night approved a one-time $500 in-kind donation to the El-Kan Western Riders. Of course the Chamber will continue its administrative support – offered to all local events -- through news releases, web postings of the event and signage.

"We wish the El-Kan Western Riders the best of luck and hope their group is able to mold their ranch rodeo into a profitable event that will continue to breathe life into Ellsworth’s future through its historic past," Eck said. "I just hope that any negative press Mr. Katzenmeier has promoted will not adversely affect the El-Kan Western Riders’ efforts."

With the upcoming election of new board members and changes that will occur, the board believes that an information gathering survey on member expectations, ideas for improvement, etc. may be helpful as the board reorganizes at the December meeting. The last survey to measure member satisfaction was conducted in 2004. However, it had a very minimal response with the majority expressing “very satisfied.” We encourage and thank you in advance for your participation.

This year’s event theme is “Keeping the Tradition Alive 1867-2007. Kelvi Peschka has been appointed chairman for the Christmas parade. Events will kickoff at 5:00 with lighting of the Christmas Tree at the Hodgden House Museum (carolers welcome); food court on west 1^st Street, kiddy train rides, east 1^st Street; Santa and Ms. Claus at the Citizens State Bank, open houses, registrations and drawings.

Our merchant’s welcome bags for new residents are nearly depleted. I will need 20 items for the usual refills. For first time participants, please, no large items such as coolers, cups etc. With over 60 items to fill, the plastic bag is packed. Due to some inventory on hand the following businesses do not have to respond unless you want to change your promotional item: Brooks Financial Services; Casey’s General Store; Cliff’s Body Shop; Custom Care; DQ Brazier; Independent Reporter; Ellsworth Federal Credit Union; Gene’s Heartland Foods; Ideal Realty; Millwood Realty; Smoky Valley Appliance, and True value Hardware. Items must be in the chamber office no later than Monday, the 19^th to be included in the next distribution.

GIFT CHECKS

In October there were two deposits totaling $330. The bank processed 50 checks totaling $705. The total amount of checks still outstanding is $3,904.09. Gift check sales are down considerably this year versus 2006. Hopefully, the holidays will boost the sales significantly.

Television is called a medium because so much of it is neither rare nor well done.

To my pleasure, Connie stopped in on the Friday before her opening on October 3, to confirm a chamber membership. We are pleased that she recognizes the value this partnership with our members and the services we provide. I shared all of the aspects of her new dining operation in my September update. Word has it that her “all from scratch” offerings are well worthy of a visit. I can, personally, attest to a recent delectable Blue Plate Special. 2) We are pleased to also welcome Rodney and Janet Kempke, owners of Ellsworth Packing, Inc. Rodney and Janet have been operating the business since the retirement of former owner, JC Schritchfield. The Kempke’s are carrying on the tradition of excellence in custom meat processing. Their products include: smoked sausage and alma cheese. Tuesday and Friday are their fresh hamburger days. We are fortunate to be able to add the packing plant to our chamber website to enhance the varied services and product availabilities in Ellsworth-Kanopolis to those seeking to visit or relocate here. Congratulations and thanks to Sherman, Hoffman and Hipp LC and associates for a delightful and informative chamber gatherin’ on the 12^th. A very nice turnout had the opportunity to meet and welcome the firm’s newest addition to the staff, Patrick Hoffman, Attorney at Law. The update and handouts chronicling the firms growth from the 1800’s to present was certainly enlightening. The building, which includes a wall safe installed in the basement of this original site of Citizens State Bank and then the post office, is a rare and unique historic relic. Attendee CSB President Dave Brownback quipped, “We believe there is still money in there belonging to us.” Everyone appeared to enjoy the hospitality and camaraderie of this monthly event. INDY WEBSITE UPGRADE

Linda Denning publisher of the Ellsworth County Independent Reporter recently announced the newspaper’s new website, www.indyrepnews.com. The site is exceptional and offers some new look features. The mini-bites of various news categories is an excellent resource without comprising the value of the total information report in the weekly news. Some sections are a work in progress. We are very fortunate to have the special features available in a small rural community. They are more commonly found in metropolitan areas. Congratulations to Linda and her associates for this progressive improvement in news information and reporting for our county.

WANTED: PIG KISSERS

The Chamber is seeking nominations and volunteers for the “Celebrity Pig Kiss’n Contest”, in Preisker Park on Saturday, September 29^th. It will be one of the features at the Cowtown Idol Contest. If you are asked to be one of the contestants your positive response will be appreciated by the chamber board. It is a special event in that there is only one winner but losing has it financial rewards for the chamber and the National Drover’s Hall of Fame Association.

Our thanks to the Independent Reporter/ National Drover’s Hall of Fame Association for hosting the August 1^st Gatherin’. The distribution of the recently completed “Longhorns” to those who made donations to the Association was an interesting highlight. Mark Roehrman, President, provided an update on the upcoming celebration on September 27-30. His summary statement that there will be so many activities going on that no one can possibly see or do them all appears to be right on target. The door prizes furnished by the Association were well received and appreciated by the lucky recipients. Thanks to Linda and her associates for their hospitality, Mark Roehrman for the timely update and to Pat Svaty for coordinating the Longhorn distribution.

Reviewed a quote from Clubine & Rettele, CHTD, CPA for a procedural audit of the financial records and a second quote to add review of the Federal Form 990-EZ. The quotes are being considered for inclusion in the 2008 budget if funding is available. Such an audit would be supplemental to the annual internal audit conducted by the board and volunteers.

2007 NEW MEMBERS

1) Owner Mike Salyers, “Just In Time”, has become another of our local entrepreneurs joining the chamber ranks. I was pleased when Mike contacted me concerning possible membership during the height of the major flooding problems in May. He had opened his water damage restoration business and expressed interest in becoming an active member. Although the demand for water damage service has diminished, Mike continues to provide services with his mold and mildew remediation; carpet, auto and upholstery cleaning. Mike works from his home office, 315 Blake, and can be reached at 531-1999 or email; justintimerestoration@gmail.com. He is also listed in our chamber business directory under Home & Gardens. We wish Mike much success and look forward to his presence at chamber events and other activities.

2) Owner Shannon Mog, “Reliant Roofing LLC”, has also committed to a Full Membership. He has been very active in our neighborhoods as well as throughout the area with his roofing crews plying their trade. NEW BUSINESSES

1) A few days prior to her official opening, I visited Dena Stoltz, owner of Studio 121, 121 East First Street, (co-located with her husband’s business, Old School Stamps). Dena gave me a “cooks” tour and the facility is as first rate as one could imagine. Although not totally completed at that time, the décor in the lower level offers an excellent environment for those who choose SPINNING (cycling) as their exercise of choice. The upper level has been renovated to accommodate the planned Yoga classes. With qualified instructors for the exercise and fitness, the Ellsworth area now has some diverse offerings in health improvement. Dena will host an Open House and Ribbon Cutting on Friday, October 5^th at 10:00 a.m. All are invited and encouraged to attend. 2) Connie Terry has purchased the former location of the Kanopolis Lunch Box, 105 N. Kansas, and plans to open her restaurant, Mom’s Diner, on October 1^st. Connie indicates that her menu will consist of Blue Plate Specials with homemade bread, buns, and pies. French fries and other supporting menu items will be prepared from scratch as well. Operating hours will be Monday – Saturday, 5 am-8 pm and Sunday 6 am – 2 pm. The telephone number is 472-8985. Plans for a ribbon cutting will be forthcoming.

The aforementioned nominating Committee will be meeting soon to discern names for the ballot for new board members. a I received a call from a Tennessee retiree who saw our Welcome Home information on a CBS affiliate station. He thought we had a free house as well. I explained the situation. He was still interested in relocating to Kansas having some relatives in KC. He was interested in housing costs so I sent him to our website realtor page.

a I had another call from a California couple who were anxious to relocate to escape the inflationary costs of living in Nevada City, California. They are planning ten more years in the workforce before retiring. They requested information on the Ellsworth area which I supplied including our outstanding medical facilities. (His wife is an RN). The good news is that IF they should choose to come, their daughter and family with three school age children may follow.

a I have had other contacts as well as have Rob Fillion and Jonathan Mitchell. They are the result of the re-televising of a previous interview that Anita Hoffhines did while serving as the Economic Development Director. The CBS CH 13 Sacramento affiliate had won an Emmy award for the story last May. They apparently felt it was worthy of a re-run. Some new seeds are again being sown. Only time will tell if they will bear fruit.

At their regular monthly meeting on July 9^th the board conducted the following business:

a Approved a motion to withdraw administrative support of the End of the Trail Ranch Rodeo and offered a contribution of $500 to the committee for radio advertising if a new sponsor is found for the 2008 event. (see Ranch Rodeo below)

a Reviewed plans for the Celebrity Pig Kiss’n Contest to be held at Preisker Park in conjunction with activities on September 29^th; gave consensus approval for following documents as presented by the director: Celebrity Nomination form; Name the Pig Contest form; selected photos for the various posters and advertisements; set deadline dates for the various start and end of the two contests.

a Reviewed plans for the September 28 Hamburger Feed Fundraiser which included locating large cookers, setting up dual line serving, establishing work crew needs and scheduling of volunteers. Further guidance from the Celebrations Committee will be forthcoming regarding location and operating procedures.

a Acknowledged the loss of full business member Emanon Salon due to non-renewal.

RANCH RODEO

As noted above the board of directors has chosen not to continue to administer the ranch rodeo. Numerous deliberations have transpired concerning financial and other resource obligations the past four years. The original intent was for the event to be a “fundraiser for the chamber and to help local businesses” as re-iterated in the minutes of a board meeting in April of 2000. The present board now believes it is in the best interest of the membership to discontinue the administration of the event. If the Ranch Rodeo Committee finds a solution for continuing the annual event, the board will contribute $500 from the radio media budget for 2008. The usual support actions provided to other Ellsworth-Kanopolis activities and events will be available as well, i.e., press releases, listings in the Chamber’s and other available websites, etc.

NEW FAMILIES

During the past month I have been impressed and pleased that several families have elected to move to Ellsworth and to raise their children here. Some I have provided information for, others I have heard about through reliable resources; I assisted a family from Plainville with information for housing contractors and other assistance on a farm home recently purchased. They have 3 school age children; I had a drop-in wanting our local telephone book and a Feist. She and her husband, who is currently employed at ECF, have moved from Great Bend into a rental unit. The have 2 children they have just enrolled in our elementary school and they have a 4 year old as well. The mother is attending classes at Ft. Hays State earning a teaching degree. She has already visited with USD 327 concerning substitute teaching; a Great Bend orthodontist and his family have purchased an Ellsworth home and are moving from rural Bunker Hill. They have three young children. He will continue to commute to his business in Great Bend. These are certainly welcome and encouraging growth aspects for our schools and communities as a whole.

In spite of a meeting with few action items the directors had several discussion items that filled the agenda. The following items were approved;

a A letter to the McPherson County Commissioners encouraging their support for endorsement of the Prairie Trail Scenic Byway that passes through Ellsworth County on Hwy K-141.

a A change to the “Garage Sale” signs available for public use to require a $5 refundable fee in the event of sign damage or destruction.

a Policy 201 – Expenses, Authorization, Reimbursement – change mileage reimbursement to read “at current State of Kansas rate”.

In other business; requested director to provide a change in Policy 202 regarding Accounts Receivable for a 30 day due date to add a “reference to Policy 306, Delinquent Membership”. The revised policy to be submitted for approval at the July board meeting; Reviewed plans for the governor’s visit to include the purchase of the 2007 Pictorial History of Ellsworth for presentation to Governor Sebelius; established basic rules for the Chamber’s “Celebrity Pig Kiss’n” contest to be held in conjunction with the Cowtown Days Festival in September; agreed to have board member Caleb Schultz, if available, attend the KMMA (Kansas Motorcoach Marketing Alliance) meeting in Hutchinson, July 18^th. If not, the director will attend; reviewed information from the Flying DX Jr Rodeo association which, annually, conducts a rodeo in the El-Kan Western Riders arena on August 3-4-5^th. Casey’s General Stores has a new manager, Mary Graves. Ms. Graves moved to Ellsworth in December. She formerly managed a convenience store in Salina. SIDEWALK SALE

David Raines, Ellsworth County Independent-Reporter, has received some interest in a sidewalk sale on Friday August 3^rd. This was the date that former sidewalk sales were held in conjunction with Cowtown Days which has been moved to September. If enough interest is received from merchants, then church groups and non-profit organizations will be invited and encouraged to set up food booths and/or other fund raising activities. JOB SEEKERS

One of the discouraging aspects of our chamber operation is the lack of information on available jobs within our communities. While housing rentals is the most active inquiry component, job seekers are also high on the list of requests. I receive inquiries from those who would accept almost anything to the professional with skilled backgrounds and college degrees. I am planning to develop a listing much like I have for housing. I will start with the job opportunities in the Ellsworth County Independent Reporter classifieds. I have the basic staffing for ECF on our office bulletin board as well as current position vacancies at the Ellsworth County Medical Center. I would appreciate receiving any position openings your business may have now or anytime in the future. I will provide a form for completion by those who drop in and are willing to provide basic information on skills, etc. The chamber does not intend to screen or judge. I will merely provide the listing and advise the recipient to call beforehand to see if a vacancy does exist. If anyone has other ideas, please let me know. We have many potential new residents walk in the door frustrated at the lack of housing and/or job opportunities. I hope you will help us turn this situation into a positive result for all concerned.

MAICO INDUSTRIES HONORED

Maico Industries was recognized with a Merit Award in the Manufacturing/Distribution Category in the 2007 Kansas Business Appreciation Month competition. The company was nominated by the Ellsworth-Kanopolis Area Chamber of Commerce. The ceremony was held at the Cloud County Community College, Concordia on June 7^th. Attending the luncheon ceremony were Owner Paul Mai, Salina; Ellsworth Plant Manager, Dave Cox and Megan Muchow, representing the Chamber. The firm provides fabrication of structural steel rigid frames for the building of industry and multi-sided poles used primarily by the Department of Transportation. We extend our congratulations to Maico management and its associates on this achievement.

FLYING

The Flying DX Bar Jr Rodeo will be held at the El-Kan Western Rider’s Arena August 3-4-5. This association has conducting this youth rodeo in Ellsworth for several years. They were participants in the annual Cowtown Days Festival parade. Although they did little in advertising, they have been an excellent tourist attraction bringing many family members and friends to watch their performances. This year they added a Friday evening event, ABRA Open Barrel Racing. Saturday, 11:00 am kicks off their standard rodeo events. Sunday begins at 9:00 with cowboy church services followed by the rodeo at 10:00 am. The El-Kan Western Rider’s provide a concession stand and retain admission fees for the use of the facility by the group. Admission is $2.00. Area youth may enter the competition. We are attempting to assist the association in spreading the word through postings on our Events website as well on our recently acquired access to WesternEvents.com. Due to changes in family activities and a desire to be more active in her personal family life, Tammy Kruse has sold her business, Oxhide Arrangements, to Kelvi Peschka. Tammy has been an active and enthusiastic supporter of our Chamber. She has been a co-sponsor for much of our co-op advertising in national publications; invested in advertising in the annual Kansas Travel Guide, which is great for our community as well as her business, and in supporting chamber sponsored activities. Kelvi went to market this week in Atlanta to make her selections for her new business, Lux Interiors. She hopes to be open for business around the 1^st of March. JANUARY CHAMBER GATHERIN’

A tip of the Ellsworth-Kanopolis Chamber of Commerce hat to Board President Sheryl Miller of Family Connections assisted by Ellsworth City Manager Jonathan Mitchell, for hosting the ‘After Hours” Gatherin’ January 18^th. I believe I speak for those in attendance that we were impressed and pleased with the recent renovation of the units which serve visitors to the Ellsworth Correctional Facility. Ms. Miller introduced her fellow board members and presented an informative overview of the progress made this past year in renovating the temporary living units. She credited the many local organizations and individuals who provided time, labor, financial resources and in-kind materials and services for the project. Jonathan provided an informative power point presentation highlighting the organization’s mission of services to the families. The facility Manager is Becky Hawks. The overflow crowd that attended enjoyed refreshments, door prizes and a tour of the remodeled guest rooms. Ellsworth is fortunate to have so many caring supporters of this exceptional facility. 2007 BANNER PROJECT

The street & highway banner replacement ad hoc committee met Friday the 12^th. After reviewing banner samples for quality, the committee made their selection. Fortunately, it was the best quote as well which made their decision much easier. Street Décor, Reno NV, has been advised that their banner and quote have been accepted. The firm has provided other banners for the City in the past which have been judged very satisfactory. The total estimated cost of the banners and replacement brackets is $3,400. The board will consider the possibility of adding some spares depending on membership support. GIFT CHECKS

In December there were five (5) deposits totaling $5,546. The bank processed 284 checks for $3,520.

The checks outstanding total is $6,314. The reconciliation listed checks on 52 pages. Needless to say, my review of the 284 cancelled checks and review of check recipients took some time. My task was made much more difficult by the number of checks that had no payee entered. Since I do a review of where checks are spent, this becomes a significant disadvantage as the bank cancellations on the reverse side are, many times, extremely difficult, if not impossible, to see the depositor’s business name. I would ask that business owners remind cashiers and/or clerks to stamp or write your business name on the payee line or when making a deposit. Over 50 gift check holders did not do that although the participant listing we provide has a very bold reminder to do so. I did find two $10 checks processed by a non-chamber business. I called them and reminded them that this is not acceptable. If you have questions or comments, please call me.

KUDOS

Our thanks to Vi Richards, Richard’s Cleaners, for the annual dry-cleaning of our Santa suit at no cost to the Chamber. This was another very active Christmas season for the suit. I hope some of you will let Vi know we appreciate it. It has become obvious that the suit requires major renovation in order to continue use. The boot leggings required re-stitching which I have arranged for. I had a seamstress assess the damage on the trousers and coat and to proceed with repairs. The coat lining has been patched. The trouser lining was cost prohibitive to replace. I had her remove the lining and stitch around the bottom pant legs. The suit should now be good for another year or more. The total cost for this repair service was $20.

Governor

The only information the board of Director’s had at their monthly meeting was that our invitation to Governor Kathleen Sebelius to be our annual meeting speaker had been favorably received. A commitment from her scheduling staff indicated that the week of March 26^th was under consideration. On Friday a confirmation was received for Monday, 26^th. The board’s preliminary plans are for a similar format as last year for Senator Pat Roberts. Ticket sales will be available for Chamber members on a first call basis and later to the public. Tickets will be $15 for members and $20 for the public. The high school commons will be the site for the reception, banquet and business meeting. The Governor’s speech will held in the Performing Arts Center. Tickets for that event ONLY will be $10 in advance, $12 at the door. Additional details will be forthcoming. Mark your calendars and make plans to attend.

NEW MANAGER

Acme Brick Company has a new manager, Allen Shultis, replacing Allen Thacker who has transferred to Arkansas. Allen has been with the company for six years and has been promoted to the management position. Allen and his family, wife Candy and six children, reside in Marquette. Our congratulations to Allen.

2007 BANNER PROJECT

The new street/highway banners and the hardware for broken and/or missing brackets have arrived. The board is very pleased and hopes that others will be as well. Our total project cost at this time is $3,392. With funds from the Ellsworth Beautification Committee, Bed Tax Carryover and the business support, the Chamber has an estimated balance of $1,656 to pay from the operating account. Planned fund raisers by the Chamber board and the Ambassador Club will assist in the final project cost. Contributions to the project are welcome at any time. In addition to the eight supporting businesses recognized last month we add our thanks to the Ellsworth County Independent Reporter and the Ellsworth Antique Mall.

TELEPHONE PROBLEMS

Although I recently installed a new telephone system, I continue to experience a call-in problem. I have had the AT&T serviceman check our system at the switching central and our office here without any observable problem. However, I had a board member call 6 times over a five hour period recently without getting a busy signal or the answering service after a 4^th ring. If any of you try to call the Chamber and do not receive the busy signal or recording, document the date and time and please let me know. If I have a sufficient response I may have to replace the phone again.

The Ellsworth office staff, headed by Branch Manager Phyllis Harris, was pleased as well. I have been keeping them apprised of our activities with courtesy updates. The local unit had previously operated out of the Good Samaritan Village. Since they are a separate entity of the Good Samaritan Society they feel it best suits their mission to occupy a separate office. Chamber Gatherin’ Kudos

We extend our thanks to Victor and Sharan Kumar, owners of the Best Western Prairie Inn Motel, for their warm welcome and hospitality at our March 16^th Chamber Gatherin’. In addition to the enjoyable morning treats, three lucky drawing winners received some very nice prizes. Victor informed the gathering that some interior improvements had been completed to the motel’s interior space as well as to some of the units. The fresh color décor was very obvious. Victor indicated that exterior improvement projects are planned for completion this year and will include new landscaping. The motel is a major asset for our community and is the sole provider of funding for the tourism bed tax which is distributed each year in March. (See Bed Tax April update).

ANNUAL MEETING & BANQUET

Final touches are currently underway for the annual meeting and banquet, Monday, March 26^th. Festivities begin with registration and reception at 5:45 pm. Introducing the Citizen of the Year will be 6:15 followed by the dinner and speaker, Governor Kathleen Sebelius at 6:30. The business meeting will begin at 7:30. We are appreciative of the support provided for this year’s event. KANSAS MAPS

We have received a supply of the 2007 Kansas maps. I had over 400 of the old, but new, 2005-6 maps. I offered them to the local and Wilson schools for classroom use. The Ellsworth Elementary, Kanopolis Middle School, EHS and Wilson schools gobbled them all up. My thanks to Indy Reporter, Alan Rausch, for delivering the Wilson shipment.

SPRING CONCERT

The Chamber’s first fundraiser will be a spring concert featuring the Kansas Wesleyan Choir and Jazz Band Concert. The concert will be held at the EHS PAC on Sunday, April 15^th at 3:00 pm. Several of the musicians in these groups are former Ellsworth students. The director, Ken Hakoda, is also a former Ellsworth teacher. We anticipate that AT& T will be our underwriter for the event. AT&T’s Director of External Affairs, Cindy Zapletal, is in the process of applying for funding for this special program. The grant will assist the Chamber with expenses that will be incurred. A free will offering will be available at the door.

CHANGING THE GUARD

In a very unusual conclusion to the election year, the Chamber now has five new board members seated at the board table. It is not too often that three incumbents depart at the same time but two resignations made it somewhat rare. The five replacement choices were very popular with the membership as the five were separated by few votes with a two-way tie for third and only one vote more than the next candidate. As a former director for non-profit corporations I have never experienced such a turnover on any board at one time. We extend our gratitude and thanks to Cee Heller who had also agreed to serve if elected. We are so fortunate to have had six qualified and capable candidates willing to step forward this year. It made the replacement process much easier for the remaining board members.

It is somewhat difficult to bid good bye to such an experienced and dedicated foursome; Linda Denning (5 years), Georgina Bates (4 years), Nancy Lamia (2 years) and, George Stover (7 years). They have provided exceptional leadership in guiding the Chamber in such a positive manner as officers and members of the board, especially in the 3+ years I have served as your director. Your Chamber is not only doing well but has a bright and promising future. We appreciate George holding his resignation to fit in with the election process.

One positive aspect of the departure of these veteran members from the board is that they will continue to be great supporters of our efforts. Linda Denning has and will always be a proponent of the Chamber. Georgina will continue her service to our communities while serving as President of the Ellsworth-Kanopolis Chamber of Commerce Ambassador Club, a position she has filled so unselfishly while serving as an officer on the board. Nancy agreed to serve a two-year unexpired term in 2004. As promised, that ended with her retirement from the Citizens State Bank & Trust Co. She has already asked me to send her an invoice for an Associate membership so she can continue to be an Ambassador. George will also remain active as an Ambassador volunteering with fund raisers and the End of the Trail Ranch Rodeo. For me, it’s like having an extended staff of supporters. It doesn’t get any better than that. Thanks to you all for your generous and faithful service.

BANNERS

The Ad hoc Banner Committee should be meeting early in January to select the new street banners based on best product for best price, to determine colors, logo and print message. At this time the best estimate for 46 banners, (the present number of hangers) based on quotes I have received, would be approximately $3,000. It could be less and should not exceed that estimate.

There will be additional expense for new pole brackets to replace broken units. Some spares would be advisable so immediate replacements could be made without additional orders. That may be another $300-400. The board has a 2007 carryover of $444 in Bed Tax funds which will be applied and the Ellsworth Beautification Committee is providing $800 from their funds. I will be requesting pledges on the 2007 Membership Renewal invoices. After all invoices are processed we will determine any balance to be funded. The board will ascertain whether there are sufficient funds in the Chamber budget to make up the shortfall or utilize funds from 2007 planned fund raisers. In the event that more pledges are received than required, the board has an option of purchasing extra banners for back-up or establishing a banner savings account for future banner purchases. Member input will be welcomed by the board.

BUSINESS “BUZZ”

We welcome and congratulate the following new businesses/government for responding to my invitation to join our Chamber family.

Full Members: Owner Peter Eck, Eck Welding & Repair, 221 E. Main, was one of my interesting recruitment opportunities. When I contacted Pete I told him about our many benefits and also added that he was eligible to vote in this year’s election. He joined without hesitation. Pete, who has had his own business for two years, performs metal fabrication & repair, equipment repair and is an authorized JACKEL ATV Dealer. I was rewarded with a walk-in when Debby Garrett came by to let me know she and her husband, Rick, had opened a new business, Star Barks Pet & Grooming. You will also find them on our Chamber website under Specialties and Service. Debby was a former Associate member and was an office volunteer for us. I thank her for her volunteer efforts and wish her and Rick much success in this new venture.

Mayor Cherie Sauers and the City of Kanopolis Council voted to approve our application for a Chamber membership investment at their December 12^th monthly meeting. When Linda Denning called me Wednesday to share the good news she received from reporter, Alan Rusch, who covered the meeting, I was very pleased. I learned that Mayor Sauers was very supportive of our efforts on behalf of the Kanopolis community and the council obviously agreed with her assessment. I believe we are fortunate to have all of the governmental, educational and health agencies as full members of our Chamber of Commerce. We invite and encourage Mayor Sauers, council members and employees to participate in as many activities and functions of the Chamber as their schedules may allow.

Friend- Jack Canyon, owner of J L Canyon Ranch, Brookville, has reinstated his Friend membership. He was a member in 2005. Jack continues to be active in tourism with his Trail Rides and working Ranch Experiences nearly year around. He also holds Spring and Fall Round-ups for cowboy wannabes. Jack is now working in cooperative association with Jesse Magana and his Rancho Milagro Historical and Nature Tours. Annette White is serving as the marketing and facilitator for the two businesses. They are providing significant opportunities for area tourism which should flow into our communities. I have provided several advertising listing for their activities through the Kansas Cattletown Coalition Schedule of Events, The Kansas Tourism website, our Chamber website and visitor’s brochure “A Guide to Merchants and Events”. We wish them much success in their endeavors.

Although there were no positive reports for new members from committee they have been working diligently to complete their recruiting assignments. I know some good seed has been planted which will pay dividends in the future. NFL NETWORK CONTROVERSY

If any of you have been following the Salina Journal and/or listen to Salina radio stations you know there are a lot of unhappy campers. The lack of access to the NFL Network by their cable carriers has not set will with their subscribers. The first squawks came when the Chiefs had a game available only on the NFL Network which is restricted in their area to Salina digital cable service which is fairly costly. “For the wealthy” is the outcry. How fortunate we are that our local provider, Eagle Community Television, made a significant investment to provide the NFL Network to its subscribers. So, sit back, relax and enjoy K-State vs Rutgers on the 28^th as those to the East continue to barter. Thanks Eagle!!

CHAMBER OPEN HOUSE

Thanks to all who joined us this (Thursday) morning for our annual open house and gatherin’. A special thanks to our retirees, Linda Denning, Georgina Bates, Nancy Lamia and new President Wanda Morford for furnishing our refreshments and hosting. We had a terrific turnout and enjoyed a great start to our Thursday.

GIFT CHECKS UPDATE

a In November 101 checks were processed with a value of $1,399. There were 4 deposits totaling $1,725. The ending balance representing uncashed checks is $4,189 as of November 30. December is going to be a boon again. Our thanks to The Good Samaritan Village, City of Ellsworth, and the Ellsworth County Medical Center for purchasing gift checks for their employees.

KANSAS TRAVEL GUIDE

The new official tourism guide for 2007 and 2008 is now on hand. The revised scheduling by the Kansas Department of Tourism provides one guide for a two year period in lieu of the former annual. A separate supplement, Kansas Events 2007, contains a dated calendar listing all events taking place on each date. This tourist supplement will be published again in 2008 to complement the regular Travel Guide. When any of you plan Kansas vacations or trips drop by and take one of each. I will be distributing copies to our local tourist business sites in the near future

OTHER

I also have a new supply of Kansas maps. You might want to replace that worn out map in your glove box. The new AT& T local directories should be shipped within the next 10 days. My office traffic increases significantly for a few weeks after they arrive. I have dozens of Central Kansas directories available now. You may want some for staff members or family.

CHAMBER BOARD BUSINESS

At their regular August meeting the Ellsworth-Kanopolis Chamber Board of Directors conducted the following business:

Approved the Director’s request to solicit bids for renewal of the chamber’s $5,300 CD which comes due September 7^th.
Approved the quarterly financial reports.
Conducted an executive session to review the Director’s performance appraisal and voted to extend Employment Letter of Agreement for another year.
Approved support of provisions of conditions to be met by the Ranch Rodeo Committee for the 2007 Ranch Rodeo.
Approved a fundraising event featuring the KWU Choir and Jazz band in a split concert on Sunday October 29^th.
Approved a revision of Policy 305 Membership & Investments which provides for a full membership to the City of Ellsworth in conjunction with their annual Grant Distribution. (see Business Buzz below)
Received a report from the Director regarding a proposed Scenic Byway for this area which will not be possible due to the close proximity of a new Scenic Byway which as been approved for a group from the Friends of Maxwell Refuge near Canton in McPherson County. (see Scenic below)_

BUSINESS “BUZZ”

New Member: We welcome City Administrator Jonathan Mitchell and the City of Ellsworth to our chamber membership. Based on a policy revision, the board of directors decided that the long-standing partnership with the city deserves the official membership recognition provided to organizations within our community. We invite Jonathan and the city staff members to participate in our chamber functions whenever their schedules will allow. We encourage our members to let Jonathan, his staff and the City Council members know how much we appreciate their financial support for on-going operations.

Member Loss: Pennington’s This n That, 304 N. Douglas, has closed their business. We wish Rene and Edith much success as they pursue other interests while remaining within our community.

Relocation: M & J Furniture & Appliance will be relocating to 304 N. Douglas at the end of August.

Relocation: The Mosaic Lobby Shop Too will be moving to 117 N. Douglas in the space formerly occupied by Hoffhines Marketing & Communications and Millwood Realty. Hoffhines’ move was reported in our last Update and will occur on August 28^th.

More business changes will be announced in the near future.

Relocation Sorta: The chamber has utilized the storage room within the ECED office for several years. Both of our inventories have grown and it is time for us to move on. I have been sorting and, with board member help, identified items for disposal, give-away and need to save. We have a very nice boxed 7’ Spruce Christmas Tree; a 36” new vinyl aluminum threshold; and a Smith Corona XD 4600 memory typewriter to offer to chamber members. First come/call can have dibs. A contribution is welcome but not mandatory. I need to know before Thursday, 31^st.

a Our current batch of gift checks have all had the expiration dates blacked out in compliance with the new legislation. My thanks to Della Dietrich and Tina Dohe, Mosaic, for completing the mark-out on over 1,275 checks while covering the office for me while I took a one day vacation.

SCENIC BYWAY

The recently approved Kansas Scenic Byway for the Maxwell group extends from near Canton, through Lindsborg, Marquette and across the Kanopolis Lake area and ends at the intersection of 140 and Old US 40, a distance of 53 miles. Fortunately corridors extend many miles off the route where noteworthy historic sites are available. The chamber hopes to convince the Maxell consortium to list Ellsworth and Kanopolis historic sites and events in the Scenic Byway brochure that will be developed by that group after all their requirements are finalized. The benefit will be enhanced for those visitors who take the tour from the southeast to the northwest. At the 140-40 jct, we would hope that they would be encouraged to turn west instead of east to visit our sites as well. Besides the drive from the jct. to Ellsworth has a great beauty attraction of its own.

MONTHLY CHAMBER GATHERIN’

Eagle Communications, Inc. put their best foot forward at the August 17^th Gatherin’ at the Ellsworth golf course meeting room. Several eagle staff members assisted in the welcome and hosting with refreshments catered by Crossroads Restaurant. General manager Joe Engle presented a very informative power point program that spanned the history of Eagle Communications over its years from a single radio station in Hays to its present network of radio, television, cable TV, internet and other telecommunications services. Mr. Engle noted that he would be pleased to make the presentation available to any area civic clubs, church groups, etc. To do so, contact the chamber and I will assist with the arrangements. Three lucky attendees walked away with $35, $25, and $15 in Chamber gift checks. The September gatherin’ will be hosted by the Good Samaritan Retirement Village.

GEORGIA’S CABOOSE PROJECT

Last month I shared information on Georgia Smith’s pet project, restoring the 1911 caboose at the museum. I have a good friend in Salina who owns a business I am trying to recruit as a Friend Member. I send her my updates to keep her apprised of our activities. This week I received an envelope which appeared to have a check inside. It did but in this instance it was for Georgia’s Caboose. When I called and invited her to my office for a surprise, it was worth a million to watch her eyes light up with much joy for such a generous donation. My sincere thanks to Ms. Barbara Hauptli for making our day!

CHAMBER FUNDRAISERS

The Cowtown hamburger feed at Preisker Park was a great success as the Chamber and Ambassador Club grossed $1,386.25 and netted $735.39. The chamber and Ambassadors split the profit.

The KWU Choir and Jazz Band Concert on October 29^th at 3:00 pm will be a free-will offering.
